Fear can be a driving force for motivation. During the launch of CEO Insights, an event series aimed at small-business CEOs, Les Wexner opened up about how fear steered him straight to success. When asked by moderator Kristyn Hartman of WBNS-TV (Channel 10) about launching his first store he said with a smile, “Quite honestly, I was very motivated by the fear of failure. I felt like a bear was chasing me, and if I stopped, the bear was going to eat me."
He told the small business owners about the hard work and long hours he put into making The Limited. He spent every waking minute at the store and even admitted to having virtually no idea of what was happening in the world around him. But, the fear he has felt over the years has never stopped him from moving forward, “You have to have sensible fear of failure, but you can’t be paralyzed by it,” he said. During the remainder of the interview Wexner gave insightful advice about what it takes to shape a business or idea into a reality.
